StepIn has networks in Roscommon and Athlone. Two more are planned in surrounding areas in the next 12 months. Opportunities exist for people to join these networks. If you believe you are suitable or know someone who may be suitable, contact us to discuss further. The contact details are given above.
StepIn is a new organisation, intending to make its services available throughout Ireland. If you work with an organisation with needs for groups of people, please feel free to discuss this with StepIn.
Call Louise Coll on 087 2128658 to discuss a potential new network member or ask for a presentation on the work of StepIn.
THE MEMBERS: Members must be willing to be support fellow network members and to take part in network meetings. Beyond this, people are free to live their lives as they wish in their homes and communities. So a member is someone who:
THESE are the views of three Athlone network members, presently living independently within one kilometre of each other. They share time together, cook meals and enjoy each others company along with the volunteer. This is what they say about network living:
Oisin: "Just better than living in the countyside. More space; I'm in charge of it. Very clean. Had no key before. Now I cook my own meals. At first it wasn't because I didn't know them." Regarding other network members: "It's nice, they're friendly; you can go to the shops with them." And comments on the volunteer: "Got to know me. We go into town, cinema, go shopping for food. He helps fix my laptop, dvd player; helps me with things."
Mary: "I can watch what I want on telly." She also says she is "so happy to be going out more."
Carmel: "Trying to get a bit of independence, to watch what I want, to be able to cook a little bit more, though I do a bit at home. To have my own garden. I'm designing my kitchen, a very exciting moment for us (her sister and herself), looking at books and different designs." Regarding the volunteer: "It's good to have someone to talk to. She's lovely." And finally: "It's good because I am not alone."
